Recently I made a trip to my local MAC counter to pick up the new Sia Viva Glam Lipstick and whilst I was there I felt like I deserved a treat. I was on my lunch break and I will be honest, I was having a bit of a shit day so I wanted to get myself a little pick me up, plus they had 15% off. Is there a better time to treat yourself other than when MAC has discount? I think not. I was tempted to get something I knew I needed but that takes the fun out of it being a treat so I decided it was time to try something new from MAC. There were a few products I was considering.
I have an empty palette which has been sat in my draw from over a year now. I have been meaning to use it but I just don't know where to start in terms of the products I want to go in it. It took me well over a year to complete my other palette and I just can't bring myself to start another. I did contemplate whether it was time to start filling this palette, despite my reluctance. One product I have always wanted to try from MAC is Peaches Blush and they actually do this in the refill pan so I did think it was time to get that. However that then limits me to a blush palette and I'm not sure that is what I want. I did also consider getting a different Paint Pot as my current eye shadow primer, the Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream, is running out. However that just didn't seem adventurous enough. Another product I considered was an item from the new skincare MAC have launched. I am really intrigued by the Reset & Revive Charcoal Mask as it is said to be like an old school mask which draws out all of your impurities. I decided against this has I have just bought quite a few Glamglow Masks and I didn't feel it was the right time to be buying more masks when I haven't finished any of the ones I own.
In the end I settled on a Cream Colour Base in the shade Hush. I have been eyeing up the RMS Living Luminizer for a long time, as I've heard In the Frow talk about it a lot in her vlogs. I have been thinking about this for a while as it always looks good on her but the main thing that has put me off buying the RMS highlight is the price. I really wasn't sure if I would use it enough to justify the cost. To aid my decision I decided I would go for a similar product which was slightly cheaper so I would know if I would get the use out of it and that sums up why this was my treat item. With 15% off this was £15.30 compared to the £36 for the Living Luminizer. I would just like to clarify that in no way am I suggesting it is a dupe but they are products which have a very similar concept.
I didn't really know which colour to go for, there were so many to choose from and I was on limited time. I didn't want something that would give me a bold blinding highlight; I wanted something that would translate as more natural. I ended up going for Hush which looks quite peachy but it has an icy shimmer running through it. This is perfect for what I wanted it for as if you catch it when it looks peachy it just looks like a bit of colour, as if it could be blush. Whereas when the light hits it, it looks like a soft glow.
I had been thinking about venturing into cream highlight as I wanted something that would blend more seamlessly into any look. Recently I have found a lot of powder highlights look chunky on me and they require quite a bit of blending to look good. By the time you have finished all that blending you have lost the impact of the product and lets face it, that is the reason we wear highlight. One of the things I love about this product is the ease of application. There are two ways I like to wear the Cream Colour Base but both require the same method of application. You do not need a brush for the Cream Colour Base, all you need is your ring finger. I take my finger with some of the product and apply it straight onto my cheek in small dabbing motions to blend it out. It is as simple as that. On an average day that is where I leave it but when I want to be extra, I use a powder highlight over the top. The sort of occasion I would do this for are few and far between however I did do this for a night out a few weeks ago and I loved the effect.
Not only does this look better on the skin compared to a powder highlight but it also lasts longer. Usually by lunchtime I've touched my face a thousand times, hit my head against the wall a few times (metaphorically) and attempted to fall asleep at my desk at least once. What I am trying to say is that my make up has a lot to contend with. Powders have very little to cling on to so they tend to just sit there and rarely look as good as I want them to. With this cream it is quite thick when you apply it but it dries so it isn't going anywhere once it has set. I will admit there are a couple of powder highlights which do last, the Anastasia Beverly Hills x Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit always lasts well but on average none of them last as long as this cream. I can still see this highlight when I get home from a long day at work which is actually remarkable.
Considering prior to this I had never tried a cream highlight (I've tried liquid,) I have been left really impressed by the ease of this product, the finish and the longevity. I use a tiny amount each time so I can't see myself getting through it very quickly but this has definitely enabled me in terms of buying the RMS Living Luminizer. After loving this MAC Cream Colour Base I know I will be likely to use another cream product. Not only has this inspired me in terms of cream products but it has also restored my faith in MAC. Not that my faith ever went but it made me realise that they do create some wonderful products which aren't always the ones that everyone raves about. I will definitely be looking to try some more MAC products so let me know if you have any recommendations.
